Rabbi Gershom Sizomu

Abayudaya Yeshiva

Abayudaya Yeshiva

Abayudaya Yeshiva
It has been a dream of rabbi Gershom Sizomu to establish a center of Jewish learning on the continent of Africa.

"It is important that Africans and others to know that they can choose Judaism as a spiritual path — and that we are open to them."

The Yeshiva will be the first of its kind on the continent of Africa. The scope of the Yeshiva complex in the village of Nabagoye includes a new synagogue, library, and classrooms. It will require furniture, office equipment, religious books and a staff of teachers and librarians.

The Yeshiva will train religious leaders from communities such as the Lemba of Zimbabwe and South Africa, the Ibo from Nigeria, the Abayudaya from Uganda, Sefwi Wiaso from Ghana, as well as individuals from Cameroon, Kenya or any other communities or individuals that may emerge. It will provide scholarships for those who are qualified.

There are many people in Uganda, and Africa at large, who are interested in Judaism. Some claim to be part of the lost tribes of Israel while others are drawn to the Torah and relationship with G-d. Their numbers are great and their devotion to Judaism true. They seek to join and strengthen the Jewish people. The best way to provide Judaism to the many potential Jews in Africa is through Jewish education.
