Be’chol Lashon will be celebrating the Festival of Lights by offering the opportunity to create and wrap Chanukah gifts that teach about mitzvah, tzedakah and global Jewish community. The first project is "Mitzvah Card" which provides the option for children to perform mitzvahs or good deeds for others. By tracing their hand, they create a Hamsa, meaning "five," as a symbol of protection, blessing or strength in many cultures around the world. Children choose five different "mitzvahs" they would like to do for others, like walk the dog, clear the table, etc. The second activity teaches about Tzedakah or giving back. Children will be asked to think about giving and why it is important as they decorate a "Tzedakah Box." The tzedakah boxes benefit the Abayudayu Jewish Community in Uganda, in addition to their Christian and Muslim neighbors, promoting peace and cooperation. These projects not only reinforce basic Jewish tenets, they encourage children to think about themselves in relationship to others and the diversity of the Jewish people.
