Outside the Box (post-production)
Lacey Schwartz thought she knew who she was. Then she learned differently. At eighteen she discovered that her biological father was not the white man who raised her but a black man with whom her mother had an affair. Suddenly Lacey's Jewish upbringing didn't tell the whole story.
OUTSIDE THE BOX is a work-in-progess documentary about one woman's quest to face the truth, and to see if she can get others to face it with her. At its core, it is a journey of self-discovery about what it means to be Black and Jewish in America, and how to reconcile those two separate identities. Lacey embarks on a journey to revisit her past and confront her family's secret. Along the way, she visits various Black Jews and their communities, hoping to learn how to successfully live as both Black and Jewish. By encountering countless assumptions and misconceptions about family, race, and religion, Lacey learns that living OUTSIDE THE BOX is complicated in a society that still prefers you check just one.
Lacey Schwartz, a graduate of Georgetown University and Harvard Law School, is a producer/director who has worked with MTV, BETJ, and @radical.media.
